3 tips to lose weight (and KEEP it off)!
This topic of weight loss comes up often in my world and so I thought I would share these three refreshingly positive points with you as if you’re anything like me, if you don’t enjoy doing something, you’re far less likely to do it! Or you’ll only do it for a period of time, i.e. a “DIEt” and then you’ll revert back to your more enjoyable old ways. This is where yo-yo dieting comes in and it’s a path I don’t wish you to be on as there is a better way!
1). WHAT YOU CAN EAT VERSUS WHAT YOU CAN’T
Being told to not eat certain foods that don’t serve your health doesn’t work for most people. It can be a negative and too restrictive of an approach, so instead, focus on eating more… more real food and food that we know does you good! By default you’ll not only consume more nutrients, and it’s nutrients that keep us alive, but you’ll also eat less processed and packaged food, avoiding some of the ingredients they may contain that can take away from your health. Real, whole foods contain not only nutrients but enzymes, necessary for every chemical process in the body.
When we are deficient in specific nutrients, there are consequences and this alone can lead to the development of poor health, cravings, an inability to shift weight or long term it can manifest in diseases which is something a lot of people don’t think about until later in life. Rarely, nutrients are looked at from this perspective. I always consider the biochemical, the nutritional and the emotional factors that may be playing a role in how someone feels as we are emotional and biochemical creatures.
2). CELEBRATE THE SMALL WINS
When you drink your two litres of water in a day, or do your Sunday prep to set yourself up for the week, or you get your body moving a few times a week at an exercise class or whatever it is you do for your fitness, then give yourself a well deserved pat on the back! Run yourself a bubbly bath or go on a trip to the movies or whatever else it is you like to do for fun! These little steps that you are doing all contribute towards not only helping you feel great day-to-day, but also achieving long-term health so enjoy the journey! It’s so much more fun that way, rather than constantly striving for the next level and not giving your body the recognition that it deserves. I’m all for self-praise!
3). FOCUS ON HEALTH, NOT WEIGHT
Far too often people set weight-related goals, which usually involve dropping a dress size or losing a certain number of kilos. While I praise the good intention, focusing on weight often means a focus on deprivation, requiring willpower. Often, this effort can’t be sustained and it leads to poor long-term results and a weaker relationship with food and one’s self-esteem, with an ‘I’ve failed’ attitude.
Instead, focus on a more health-specific result rather than a weight loss strategy, and weight loss will happen as a side effect of being healthy, not the other way around. Behave your way to health and practice the habits that healthy people do – more on this in another post.
For example, set goals around increased energy or feeling happier. That way, losing weight will be an added bonus rather than the driving force and you will make sustainable changes to your diet and lifestyle. Plus you’ll be happier and healthier as a result – winning formula.
