The ultimate skin food smoothie
If you’re not already on the smoothie bandwagon then hop on! It’s such a quick way to prepare breakfast and really jam-pack your morning with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats to set your body up for the day! They are also surprisingly filling. This smoothie is so easy to make and really fills you up. There are only ingredients in here that add to your health and not a single one that takes away from it.
The combination of avocados, kale, kiwis, coconut oil, mint, apple and protein really feed your skin all the building blocks needed to form healthy skin cells and be blemish free and glow!
Your skin is the largest organ in the body and a really good indicator to gauge how healthy and happy your body is working on the inside. A good sign is when your skin and eyes are glowing! I’m so fussy about my food but I also pay great attention to my skincare products since anything you slather on your skin is directly absorbed into your bloodstream. I make sure I can eat anything I put on my skin so my skin care is skin food. I will do a whole post dedicated to skincare products and what to look out for and brands to trust etc.
Kale is full of vitamin C and iron, which helps with the production of collagen, prevents skin damage and fends off wrinkles – yes please! Usually I make this smoothie with regular kale or cilantro kale, but this time round my local market had this amazing Russian kale in store and it looked too pretty not to try, with its white leaves and a speckled green border. Regular curly kale works perfectly too though, as does spinach if kale isn’t in stock.
Avocados truly moisturise from the inside out as they are packed with a range of healthy oils, vitamins and nutrients. They also add a gorgeous creamy texture to your smoothie.
Peppermint has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties which is why it’s used as a base in a lot of anti-blemish products.
I use coconut oil for so many different functions. Used topically it’s amazing applied directly on the skin as a moisturiser or as a hair mask and it’s also delicious to cook with. It has anti-microbial properties and is high in satured fats so when used in smoothies it helps fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K be absorbed more efficiently, so your body enjoys more nutrients from the same meal just by adding coconut oil!
- ½ an avocado
- 5 large kale leave, de-stemmed or 1 big handful of spinach
- 1 lime, peeled
- 1 green apple, peeled and cored
- ½ cup fresh peppermint/ mint leaves
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1 scoop of protein powder
- 3 ½ cups filtered water (you may need more depending on your preferred consistency)
- Add all the ingredients to your blender and blend for a minute or so, until smooth and creamy.
- You may need to add more water depending on your preferred consistency and depending on your blender, you may need to add kale in slowly as it's so fibrous so can give your blender a challenge!
- Serve with ice cubes, mint leaves or slices of fresh lime.
